What are overstay fees?
Overstay fee for Allego High Power Chargers in Europe
Overstay fees are calculated depending on location and type of charger. For High Power Chargers (HPC), we start charging an overstay fee after 45 minutes when the car is not charging. For example: a driver charges for 15 minutes and stays for a total of 50 minutes, we charge for 5 minutes of overstay fee. When a driver charges for one hour, and stays for one hour and 10 minutes, we charge 10 minutes.

Overstay fee for AC chargers in the Netherlands
Overstay fees for AC chargers work differently from HPC, since AC charging sessions naturally take longer. Allego’s data shows a car connected to an AC charging station is actively charging only about 40% of the time, on average 3.5 hours of charging against 5.5 hours connected.
The fee is designed to close that gap and keep chargers moving from driver to driver.
80% of AC charging sessions finish well within 5 hours. So the overstay fee applies after 5 hours from the start of the session, also when you are still charging.

Overstay Fee for Tour & Taxis Brussels
The T&T location runs on the same overstay logic as AC charging elsewhere, drivers there are connected to a charger without actively charging about half the time, averaging 4 hours plugged in and charging, then another 4 hours idle.
Since 80% of sessions wrap up inside 6 hours, that’s where the grace period sits. Past that point, the fee counts connected time, not charging time.

Public chargers, including Allego’s, are shared spaces. When drivers leave their car connected well after it’s finished charging, sometimes for hours or even days, other EV drivers get displaced to less convenient chargers or times. Allego’s overstay fee exists to keep charging spots turning over fairly, on both AC and HPC chargers, so the growing number of EV drivers can actually get access to the infrastructure they need.
Allego’s mission is affordable, reliable charging for drivers across Europe, not selling parking spots. Once a car’s charged, drivers still have time to grab a coffee or finish an errand. After that, an overstay fee kicks in to keep the spot moving for the next driver. How long that grace period lasts and how much the fee costs depend on the charger type and location.
Yes. HPC chargers on Allego’s network have a 45-minute grace period, counted from the start of your charging session. AC chargers charge more slowly, so Allego sets a longer grace period from the start of the session too, 5 hours in the Netherlands and 6 hours at Tour & Taxis Brussels, based on how long most sessions actually take.
It depends on the charger. At HPC chargers, Allego never charges an overstay fee while your car is actively charging, the fee only starts once both the 45-minute grace period has passed and charging has actually stopped. At AC chargers in the Netherlands and Tour & Taxis Brussels, the overstay fee applies after 5 or 6 hours from the start of your session regardless of whether you’re still charging, so it’s possible to be charged there while still connected and charging.
It depends on the charger. Allego’s HPC overstay fees apply at any time, since fast chargers are meant for short stops. Allego’s AC overstay fees in the Netherlands and at Tour & Taxis Brussels only apply between 07:00 and 23:00, up to a maximum of 16 hours.
Not all. Some Allego stations in the Netherlands, part of specific public tenders in Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, and Gelderland, are exempt from the overstay fee.
Not necessarily. If you charge through a Mobility Service Provider (MSP) rather than directly with Allego, that provider sets its own pricing, which may differ from Allego’s standard overstay rates. Contact your MSP for their exact rates.
Overstay fees appear as a separate line item in your charging session history, visible in the Allego app or on the invoice from your charging provider.
