In response to the growing demand for fast charging solutions and the limited capacity of the existing grid connections, Allego has launched a pilot program featuring a new type of charger with a built-in battery. This technology allows for faster charging with a grid connection that originally is too small to provide the power peak necessary for (ultra) fast charging. This makes fast charging accessible for EV drivers in all places.
One of the challenges faced by Allego is the strain on the grid connection caused by the increasing number of EVs and other sustainable energy consumers like heating pumps. In many cases, it’s impossible or takes a very long time to upgrade the existing grid connection. These issues have prompted Allego to explore innovative solutions to address the growing demand for fast and reliable EV charging. The pilot program consists of a charger that uses a combination of power from the grid and the charger’s built-in battery. By tapping into the battery’s stored energy, the charger can provide a higher power output using a smaller grid connection. This results in ultra fast charging, everywhere. In line with our commitment to sustainability, the pilot will be running on 100% renewable energy.
“We want to ensure that EV drivers have access to ultra fast charging in our whole European charging network, even in places where the grid connection is too small. This pilot makes that possible, without EV drivers having to wait months or years on grid infrastructure upgrades”, says Jules Sommers, Senior Product Manager at Allego. “This pilot program enables us to optimize the charging experience by utilizing both the grid connection and the charger’s battery, providing a practical and scalable solution.”
The pilot is located at La Place in Meerkerk in the Netherlands, adjacent to the highway A27, making it easily accessible for EV owners in the area. Starting Monday, June 19, 2023, the charger will be available for public use. We will be running the pilot program for three months and then evaluate the results. If the pilot is a success, we aim to expand the implementation of this innovative charging solution to other locations, potentially revolutionizing the EV charging landscape and providing a scalable and efficient charging infrastructure for electric vehicle owners across the country.
Will you be visiting the pilot location? If so, we would love to hear your thoughts. At the location, you will find a QR-code, which leads you to a short questionnaire.
